In 2012 Sneeuberg Nature Reserve and four neighboring landowners created the Compassberg Protected Environment, comprising about 26 000 hectare, under the auspices of the Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency's Stewardship Program. This program is geared to protect environments of specific natural importance and beauty, in partnership with the owners of the land. The Compassberg Protected Environment protects our land from excessive development, mining and drilling for oil or gas. The CPE is the first Protected Environment in the Eastern Cape, and the second in South Africa.
